The passing of beloved gospel singer New Jerusalem, renowned for transforming Tiv Swange music into a vibrant tool for evangelism, has plunged the Christian community in Benue State into mourning. Leading the wave of tributes is Samuel Ortom, the former Governor of Benue State.

While addressing members of the Brethren Prayer Group, Ortom described the late artist, Ikyereve, as a devout Christian whose music carried a spiritual message that resonated far beyond Nigeria.

“That unique sound and anointing drew me into a personal relationship with him, which blossomed into a lasting bond with his family,” Ortom recalled.

He also shared a touching memory from a trip to Australia, where he heard New Jerusalem’s music being used in a music class by a Tiv teacher—evidence, he said, of the singer’s global reach and divine impact.

Ortom extended heartfelt prayers to the bereaved family and pledged unwavering support to them and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe. He promised to stand by them even after the burial rites were completed.

Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, the singer’s elder brother, thanked the former governor for his constant support during the late singer’s illness and afterward. He revealed that one of Israel’s sons had even been named “Ortom” in gratitude for the former governor’s kindness.

Prayers were also offered by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo of the Brethren Prayer Group, who interceded for the soul of the departed and strength for the family.

New Jerusalem is survived by his wife and music partner, Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and many loved ones.
