Pastor Tunde Bakare has shared insights into his private conversations with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, following the leader’s recent passing.

In an interview with TVC News, Bakare was asked whether he had ever expressed his well-known criticisms of Buhari’s administration directly to the former president. Though he declined to reveal the exact content of their discussions, Bakare confirmed that he had held multiple private meetings with Buhari.

One such occasion, he recalled, was following the controversial raid on the residence of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho. Pastor Bakare said he was furious about the incident and confronted President Buhari, who denied having prior knowledge of the operation.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s ongoing challenges, Bakare was quick to defend Buhari from being solely blamed for the nation’s economic woes. He emphasized that Buhari was not an economist and relied heavily on advisers in that area.

“General Buhari was not an economist,” Bakare said. “He had people who were in charge of that. Some of the economic decisions made back then are still being felt in our nation today. However, it would be wrong to place the blame solely on the head of one man. Jonathan was accused of mismanagement, corruption, this and that…”

Pastor Bakare’s remarks highlight a broader call for a more nuanced understanding of leadership accountability in Nigeria’s political and economic landscape.
