The Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church (CGCC), Pastor Tunde Bakare, has refuted claims that the late former President Muhammadu Buhari was a religious bigot.

During a recent appearance on Channels Television, Pastor Bakare addressed what he described as a widely held misconception about Buhari’s religious beliefs. According to him, Buhari was far from being a religious fundamentalist, as many had assumed.

“I once thought he was a religious extremist until I got close to him,” Bakare stated. “But I discovered otherwise.”

Bakare, who was Buhari’s running mate in the 2011 presidential election, shared a personal account to illustrate his point. He recalled an incident that took place after the flag-off of their campaign in Kaduna. After the event, they rode together in the same vehicle to Buhari’s residence.

“When we arrived at his home, he staggered a bit while getting out of the car, and the next words out of his mouth were, ‘Jesus Christ of Nazareth,’”Bakare recounted. “I was surprised and asked, ‘General, what was that?’He responded, ‘You don’t have a monopoly on Jesus Christ—I’m thanking God.’”

Pastor Bakare went on to reveal that many members of Buhari’s domestic staff were Christians. “His bodyguards were all Christians. His driver of over ten years once asked me to pray for him. I told him I don’t offer Islamic prayers, and he replied, ‘I’m a Christian, sir.”

Bakare’s remarks were made in light of Buhari’s recent passing. The former president reportedly died in a private hospital in London on Sunday after receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. He was buried in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday.
