Pope Leo XIV Declares AI the Greatest Challenge to Human Dignity and Justice.

Pope Leo XIV: AI Threatens Human Dignity and Justice!

In his first address as pontiff, Pope Leo XIV—born Robert Prevost—set a bold and thoughtful tone for his papacy, identifying artificial intelligence (AI) as the most urgent challenge facing humanity today.
Speaking to the College of Cardinals following his election, the new pope emphasized that AI brings with it profound questions about human dignity, justice, and the future of labor—matters the Church must engage with actively and prayerfully.

The newly elected pope explained that his choice of the name “Leo” was intentional, paying homage to Pope Leo XIII (1878–1903), who famously defended the rights of workers during the Industrial Revolution. Pope Leo XIV seeks to follow in those footsteps, championing social justice in the midst of a rapidly advancing technological age and increasing economic inequality.

“AI poses new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice, and labor,” Pope Leo said.

He also expressed deep respect for the legacy of Pope Francis, vowing to continue his efforts in making the Church more accessible and service-oriented. Leo emphasized a vision of the Church that is not isolated from the world but in open dialogue with it—including the promotion of local language services alongside traditional Latin liturgy.

In a rare departure from Vatican protocol, the pontiff opened the floor to questions from the cardinals, inviting them to voice their thoughts and concerns about the future direction of the Church. This open exchange was welcomed warmly.

Spanish Cardinal Aquilino Bocos Merino described the two-hour meeting as “very cordial and communal,” while Irish Cardinal Seán Brady noted that Pope Leo “listened very carefully,” adding, “He knows he’s going to have to make the decisions—but we’re here to help him.”

As the world watches this new chapter in Church leadership unfold, Pope Leo XIV has already made it clear: his papacy will be one of discernment, dialogue, and dedication—not only to the Church but to the spiritual and social well-being of humanity in an age of technological transformation.
