Spain’s Proposed Law May Jail Pastors Who Offer Support on Sexuality

The Spanish Evangelical Alliance (AEE) has voiced strong opposition to a proposed law in Spain that could result in pastors and counselors being imprisoned for offering guidance to individuals seeking help to leave a homosexual lifestyle or align their gender identity with their biological sex.

With backing from several political parties, Spain’s lower legislative chamber recently approved the initial phase of an amendment aimed at criminalizing “conversion therapies.” According to a statement from the Spanish Congress, those found guilty of providing such services could face prison terms ranging from six months to two years.

The AEE contends that the bill dangerously mischaracterizes genuine pastoral care and voluntary personal support as coercive “conversion therapy.”

In a statement, the Alliance noted: “This pattern keeps repeating itself: first, the concept is redefined, then public perception is shaped, and finally, prison sentences are imposed as a form of intimidation.”

They emphasized that authentic pastoral support is not about coercion or manipulation. “Such support is offered freely and only to those who willingly seek it,” the group explained.

The Alliance further warned that the legislation could introduce a troubling double standard. According to their statement, while the law supports and promotes gender transitions in one direction, it criminalizes those who wish to de-transition or explore alternative paths. “The regulation enforces a moral viewpoint — rewarding some decisions while penalizing others.”

Should the bill gain approval in the Senate, its implications could be severe. Pastors, parents, and professionals who offer assistance to individuals hoping to change their sexual orientation or gender identity could face criminal charges and potential imprisonment.

In response, the AEE pledged to defend freedom of conscience and belief. The organization called on legislators to uphold respect for fundamental rights and urged them to reject measures that infringe on personal liberty and religious expression.
