A Michigan pastor is praising divine intervention and quick-thinking church members after a gunman opened fire outside CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne on Sunday, leaving one injured and the suspect dead.

The attacker, identified as 31-year-old Brian Anthony Browning, drove into the church parking lot wearing a tactical vest and armed with two guns. He began shooting as he approached the building, striking a parishioner in the leg. But in a courageous act, another church member used his car to hit the gunman mid-attack, buying time for staff to respond.

Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong confirmed that at least two church staff returned fire, fatally wounding Browning. The injured victim is expected to fully recover.

Senior Pastor Bobby Kelly, who had previously spoken with the suspect during past visits to the church, said Browning appeared to be mentally unstable and claimed to hear from God. Although he never made direct threats, Pastor Kelly recalled sensing spiritual unrest in him.

“I believe the hand of God was over us,” Pastor Kelly shared. “That member who intervened with his vehicle—he was led by the Spirit. His bravery gave our staff precious moments to protect everyone.”

Kelly revealed that he had prepared a sermon titled “God’s Hand of Deliverance” that very morning. He also noted the church had originally planned multiple outdoor services for June but reduced it to one—a decision he now sees as providential.

“If we had been outside, this could have ended very differently,” the pastor said. “There’s no doubt in my heart—God shielded us.”
