Wike Warns Church Against Repeating Political Mistakes Ahead of 2027

Wike to Church: Your 2023 Political Choices Almost Cost Nigeria Its Future

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned church leaders to tread carefully in their political engagements, stating that the church nearly made a critical mistake during the 2023 general elections—one that could have jeopardized Nigeria’s future.

Wike made the statement on Sunday during a Thanksgiving service held at St. James’ Anglican Church in Asokoro, Abuja. The service was organized to mark the successful completion of projects recently commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Reflecting on the church’s involvement in the last election cycle, Wike said,

“Let me use this opportunity to speak to the church – you nearly made the worst mistake in 2023. We need to be very careful this time around.”

The former Rivers State governor emphasized the need for church leaders to seek counsel from politicians within their congregations before making political decisions.

“You made a decision that would have cost some of us our future. Ask us questions—we are the politicians,” he said.

“If you want to understand what’s happening, call your senators, your representatives. They are in this church. They’ll educate you.”

He urged churches to verify political narratives and resist manipulation, especially as the nation approaches the 2027 elections.

“There’s a lot of blackmail going on again. Be wise. If what happened in 2023 had succeeded, some of us wouldn’t be here today.”

Wike’s remarks serve as a call for deeper collaboration between faith and politics, urging the church to stay informed through trusted voices within its ranks.
